Talk:Running AGI Games

From AGI Wiki

Jump to: navigation, search

I am wondering if we should mention programs like dosbox. With dosbox you can emulate dos and play agi games using the original interpreter on other systems. As example, I am using linux and have dosbox installed and can use it to play AGI games in linux without needing a special interpreter.

Dosbox is okay for me.

The problem for running some fan agi games like SQ: replicated, Enclosure, V,... Those games need either Sarien or Nagi. They cannot running with the original agi. I doubt those games can't be run on the original pc.

Somebody told me I also use a hack agi to run my games. Right I use agimouse but the hacked agi can still run on the original pc.

Using either Nagi and Sarien need more powerful and faster pcs.

Since I already mentioned other emulators, I think DOSBox should be mentioned as well. I've edited the article.

Should we add quick guides on setting up the emulators as well?
Should we mention AGIL? I've never used it and I don't know if it was ever fully functional. According to this the author dropped it after NAGI went open source.

Robin those games can still be played on linux with NAGI. I have NAGI running on linux right now and it can play those games. And if anyone ever ports NAGI to any other systems then they will be playable on those too. And Sarien might also be able to play those games and Sarien works on almost all systems.

I have been trying all day to get AGIL to work. The x11 driver compiles... but when I run it from command line it freezes. The svga driver compiles... but it gives an I/O error when I try to run it and it quits. And the sdl driver won't even compile at all. So AGIL might not really be a solution for people looking to play AGI games on linux. Of course my problems with AGIL might be due to my limited knowledge of compiling stuff and of linux in general. Although it should be noted that I was able to get NAGI to compile in linux with the SDL driver, and I got sarien to compile with x11 video driver... although without sound support since I used an unstable snapshot that has a bug in the alsa and the sdl sound drivers.

And yes I think instructions on setting up emulators would be a good idea.

Whoohoo finally got AGIL working. Turns out the sound server that agil uses is used by my desktop for system sounds. I killed esd, then boom AGIL comes on rather than freezing. Although now I don't have system sounds... anymore till I restarted esd.

Although it still isn't perfect... the sound is very fragile, every 3 seconds it skips a few sounds in the openeing song for SQ2.

Should dosbox get multiple sections? Because the instructions for installing it vary from system to system. Installing it in windows and installing it in linux was 2 complete different things.

Hi Chris

"Robin those games can still be played on linux with NAGI."

I was not talking about linux. I was talking about newest agi games that won't work on early pcs (pc, xt, at,...).

Agimouse still works on early pcs but not newest fan games who can't work on those computers because Nagi and Sarien need more recent and faster computers to run them.

--Robin Gravel 18:56, 31 Aug 2005 (CDT)

Actually sarien can be built to work with dos robin. Plus with some options when compiling and a few modifications you could make it work better on older machines.

--Chris Cromer 03:24, 1 Sep 2005 (CDT)

Hi Chris

I tried Sarien 0.7.0 dos version of course.

Sarien freezes on Femo Duo screen.

For your comments, do you mean I need compiling the agi interpreter or compiling all fan games who they may not work with agi or agimouse?

--Robin Gravel 08:22, 1 Sep 2005 (CDT)

You should try a more recent version of sarien than 0.7.0. The cvs snapshots work much better than 0.7.0 and are what I use when I make sarien binaries for people that can't compile it.

I meant compiling the interpeter. You can remove all the extra stuff in sarien like amiga palette's the new menu graphics, and other such things. Without alot of these things it will make it faster.

Of course most of that stuff can be turned off from command line, so doing it when compiling isn't necessary.

Hi Chris

I found this version at http://sarien.sourceforge.net/

So where can I find the latest version of sarien?

--Robin Gravel 10:08, 1 Sep 2005 (CDT)

http://sarien.sourceforge.net/daily/

Those are the most updtodate versions... but they are considered bleeding edge and can be buggy sometimes depending on what was changed.

I got 404 message when downloading the latest dos version of Sarien but

the previous version is still here.

I got funny message when running Sarien: "warning: game crc not listed, assuming agi version 2.917" when playing King's quest.

I guess a file is missing. .ini and/or .cfg ?

And saving games and loading games are not implanted yet.

I don't know high language so modifying the interpreter is out for me.

I played V with Sarien. Check this out.

Today's hasn't been built yet. But it should be by the end of the day. I always have to download the one from yesterday each time the one's from the same day never seem to be built when I try.

--Chris Cromer 15:28, 1 Sep 2005 (CDT)

Alright I am going to write the doc on getting sarien running on linux later on. Anyone care to work on writing how to get NAGI to work in windows?

--Chris Cromer 13:43, 3 Sep 2005 (CDT)

I played all fan games who they can't be run on PC/XT/AT computers with the latest version of DOS Sarien. I mean any fan games with memory problem with original agi or with agimouse.

Ausser Kontrolle (Abnormal program termination and return to DOS)

Space Quest 0: replicated (Assertion failed. Abnormal program termination and return to DOS)

V demo: (Warning: game crc not listed, assuming AGI version 2.917) The last V demo is the only fan game using agi 3.x I played. Sarien does not play correctly.

Enclosure: (the game freezes at femo duo screen. It crashes my computer).

Well, Sarien (dos version) is not a good agi to play seriously agi games.

I didn't check the windows version of Sarien but I doubt it can run on older computers like Nagi.

Chris: great work on getting this page started!
Before we start, please install the development sdl libraries.

I think this might need a bit more explaining. It'd be great if people only needed to look at this page to get their games running.

I've added a link to the AGIL source on AGIDev.com. Is that the most recent version available?

I'll add how to get NAGI working on Windows tomorrow. I was wondering: does the thing where you put your game folders inside the NAGI folder, so you only have to use one interpreter for all your games and get a nice menu when you run it, also work under Linux? And is the naga.ini file the same as in Windows?

--StrangeQuark 15:28, 3 Sep 2005 (CDT)

Not sure how to better explain it... it depends on what distro of linux you have installed. For instance in Ubuntu which is what I use, I got into the synaptic package manager and select libsdl1.2-dev and click mark for install and then apply. And it's then installed for me. But not all linux distro's have synaptic packages manager, or even run on the debian system like Ubuntu.

If it's version 1.5 then yes that's the latest version. I also have 1.0 and 1.1 here. Missing 1.2 through 1.4.

Yes the .ini files are the same in linux as they are in windows. And yes you can make it show a menu to select all your games.

--Chris Cromer 17:08, 3 Sep 2005 (CDT)

Well I have handled all the linux AGI interpreters, all that's left is dos, windows, and other misc system interpreters/emulators.

I think I may handle dosbox instructions tomorrow.

Anyone care to handle the dos/windows sarien? It should be much simpler since there are pre compiled binaries that work well for dos and windows. Just a matter of downloading and copying it into your games directory.

--Chris Cromer 01:02, 5 Sep 2005 (CDT)

I'm without internet access for a while (I'm at a university computer right now). I'll add the Windows info when I get back (in 1 to 2 weeks).
